Book Review: The Whole-Body Approach to Osteoporosis: How to Improve Bone Strength and Reduce Your Fracture Risk by Dr. Keith McCormick

At Tendwell, we often collaborate with patients over concerns of osteopenia, osteoporosis and overall bone health. Utilizing a functional medicine approach that includes advanced testing we are able to tease out specific areas where each individual needs support. One of my favorite books on this subject is The Whole-Body Approach to Osteoporosis: How to Improve Bone Strength and Reduce Your Fracture Risk by Dr. Keith McCormick.  This book provides a comprehensive framework to managing and preventing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by low bone density and a tendency to fracture. The book emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and optimal hormonal balance, as key factors in maintaining strong bones.

The book offers detailed information for the citizen scientist, on how bone is built and maintained, including the role of calcium, vitamin D, and other important nutrients. It also explores the different factors that can contribute to bone loss, such as hormonal imbalances, chronic inflammation, celiac disease and medication use, and offers practical strategies for minimizing their impact.

The author, Dr. Keith McCormick, provides a wealth of information on the latest diagnostic and treatment options for osteoporosis, including medications, supplements, and other therapies. He also addresses common myths and misconceptions about the condition and offers guidance on how to work with healthcare providers to develop a personalized treatment plan. Dr. McCormick is an experienced chiropractic physician who has been treating patients with osteoporosis for over 20 years. He has also conducted extensive research on the topic and has developed a comprehensive approach to managing and preventing osteoporosis, which he outlines in his book. Overall, The Whole-Body Approach to Osteoporosis provides a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their bone health and reduce their risk of fractures. It offers practical advice and actionable steps that can be incorporated into daily life to promote strong, healthy bones.

I enjoyed reading Dr. McCormick’s thoughts on osteoporosis treatment. I find his approach fairly straight forward and I like how he outlines plans for patients to track their own progress. I had first encountered Dr. McCormick speaking on a podcast about his personal experience as a patient. Dr. McCormick was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis at age 45. His own healing journey lead him to become an expert in treating osteoporosis from a functional and integrative perspective.  Since his diagnosis, Dr. McCormick has dedicated his professional life to developing an effective treatment to this chronic disorder. I think this book is a must for anyone who is concerned about their bone health and wants to use an integrative approach to treatment.
