Too many women are still being denied hormone therapy, even in 2025. I hear heartbreaking stories all the time: women in their 40s and 50s with classic menopausal symptoms—hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia—turned away by their clinicians.
Instead of receiving safe, effective treatment, many are told:
- “You’re too young for menopause.”
- “Your bloodwork looks normal.”
- “Because of family history, hormones aren’t safe for you.”
- “We don’t prescribe hormones here.”
Instead, they’re offered antidepressants or sleeping pills—medications that don’t treat the root cause and can come with side effects.
The Treatment Gap
A Yale study of 500,000 women found that while 60% sought help for menopause symptoms, over 75% went untreated.² Too many women are left to suffer through years of symptoms and increased health risks without support.
Why Doctors Don’t Prescribe HRT
The problem isn’t bad intentions—it’s lack of training and outdated fears.
- Only 20% of OB-GYN programs include menopause education.³
- A Mayo Clinic survey found just 6.8% of residents felt prepared to treat menopausal women.⁴
- Many clinicians still rely on old interpretations of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study, which overstated the risks of hormone therapy.
What the Science Really Shows
- Estrogen-only therapy did not increase breast cancer risk—in fact, risk was lower compared to placebo.⁶
- Estrogen + synthetic progestin showed a small risk increase in older women, but benefits in younger women (under 60).
- Today, we use bioidentical, plant-based hormones that are safer and better tolerated than the older drugs studied in the WHI.
What You Can Do
- Learn the facts. Resources like Estrogen Matters and Dr. Mary Claire Haver’s books are excellent starting points.
- Bring information to your clinician. Sometimes all they need is updated guidance.
- Seek a menopause-trained provider. Look for a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP).
- Consider telemedicine. Services like ours make evidence-based care more accessible.
The Bottom Line
Menopause is natural—but suffering through it isn’t. Hormone therapy can ease symptoms, protect bone and brain health, and lower the risk of chronic disease.⁷
If your doctor won’t discuss hormone therapy, it may be time to find one who will. You deserve care that reflects today’s science, not yesterday’s fear.
